Empowering Faster Decision-Making Across the Enterprise

As enterprise data centers continue to grow in complexity, IT managers need real-time monitoring and visibility into errors that threaten data center reliability. To address these issues, Intel is proud to announce a multi-platform collaboration with Splunk to help customers unlock the value of their data and accelerate decision-making across the data center with a new data center telemetry solution, an optimized reference configuration, and additional solutions for both network and IoT.

A key part of this collaboration is a new system-level telemetry solution for the Splunk Data-to-Everything™ Platform. With this solution, we are giving enterprises a way to improve performance and efficiency through a more comprehensive view of their data center. This solution improves visibility into the data center and allows for more efficient root cause analysis, which can lower TCO and improve up time.

Insights the Industry Needs

For the first time, Intel is providing an open source baseboard management controller (BMC) plugin based on OpenBMC definitions for broad market analytics. OpenBMC is a project of the Open Compute Project, an open standards organization for data center scaling started by Facebook, of which Intel is a founding member. The Intel® OpenBMC Splunk plugin combines Intel Crash Log technology to capture a comprehensive set of data from the platform, BMC system event logs (SEL), and other telemetry data, such as thermal data and fans made available through RedFish, into the Splunk® Enterprise platform. Intel’s portfolio of products and ecosystem strength will deliver an open-standards approach that streams platform-level data into Splunk’s widely used platform for data analysis and deep insights.

“This is a brand-new data set for Splunk that gives insight into something that wasn’t visible beyond the hypervisor & operating system. We’re getting into the lower level that provides more visibility across the data center and can be correlated with data up the stack,” says Jason Conger, Principal Engineer at Splunk.

Further Integrated Solutions

As part of the collaboration, Intel is releasing an optimized reference configuration to help customers choose hardware products based on their use cases. Splunk and Intel worked together to develop and benchmark various Splunk workloads using the latest Intel compute and storage hardware to provide a business-level overview of how to build an optimized environment for Splunk on-premises or cloud deployments.

For indexing intensive workloads, we’ve created hardware profiles that can meet or exceed Splunk recommendations when incorporating the scaling of DRAM, turning on Intel Hyper-Threading Technology, and following prescribed system settings from Splunk. For search intensive workloads, we found hardware profiles that effectively deliver search experiences when scaling DRAM, using Intel Optane SSDs for storage, and incorporating Intel Xeon® Platinum 8260 processors for compute. (See reference configuration for full performance details.)

Intel is also releasing a network analytics solution brief for the enterprise edge as part of a complete, end-to-end intelligent edge analytics solution. And we will be making an IoT solution available on the Intel solutions marketplace to accelerate Splunk at the edge, integrating the Intel OpenVINO™ inference engine with Splunk to correlate real-time image and machine data.

Next Steps

Moving forward, Intel and Splunk have established a broad engagement between core product development teams across data center, client, edge, and IoT to deliver future integrated solutions and enable customers to grow revenue, manage costs, and gain competitive advantage.
